Travel hacks for the modern traveller

Travelling is one of the more expensive activities you take part in. Just because travelling tends to be expensive should not be a reason you’re put off. Instead, you should find alternatives to reduce travel expenses in ways that allow you to not break the bank but still see the world. We can’t live our lives staying in one place, when the world has so much to offer.

Planning properly

A key reason why you lose money is spending without thinking.

Budgets can do much to help restrain reaching for your wallet. Plot out how much you have, how much you’re willing to spend, then begin looking at the route you want to take. Beforehand decide on whether it’s viable to stay at motels, hotels and so on. Also take time to learn how far you can travel before exhaustion sets in.

Use technology to calculate travel times, as this might be a good measure of when your body will reach breaking point. Google Maps can calculate events on the road in real time. Use it to calculate distance and travel times, since it’s not merely distance but traffic which impacts your driving.

You can also start getting quotes from accommodation spots to compare prices and decide precisely where to go. This lets you budget properly, helping you save money.

Be prepared

It’s all good and well to have your budget sorted, but what about your safety? Do you have the necessary documents and funds if you need to call for roadside assistance?

Furthermore, you might not be travelling in a modern populated city like New York or Cape Town. If you’re on a road trip, the chances are you’ll often find yourself is desolate  areas that are hard to reach. This means you may need repair skills yourself. While it’s obvious you need to have a repair kit on board, it’s useless if you don’t even know how to change a tire.

Travel early

As we noted, traffic can be a big problem. However, if you plan your travels in the early hours of the morning, you can miss most of it. Since the roads aren’t as busy, and there are fewer cars and people around, there’s also less chance of an accident.

Basically, the best way to hack your way through travelling is to plan and prepare. A mapped out journey is far more enjoyable than one hindered by the anxiety of not knowing your next move. Do the necessary to ensure you arrive at your destination or enjoy your adventure, safe and sound.
