How to pass the time while travelling

Travelling is the best thing you can do for yourself. It fills your mind and heart with new thoughts and experiences, opening you up to new worlds, literally and figuratively.

Unfortunately, though, travelling is also filled with hours and hours of wasted time. Waiting for planes, trains and automobiles. Driving along long stretches of road in the dark, with nothing to see or scenery to admire.

But even while travelling, even when it seems least likely, there is plenty to do to keep yourself occupied. Here are our favourites.

Car games

Those long stretches of road are perfect for car games – provided it is light out, of course. Play old favourites like Punch Buggy, where you hit a friend every time you see a VW Beetle, or I Spy, where you guess what others are seeing along the way. This is your time to be creative: “I spy with my little eye something beginning with a D. A dangerous number of people crammed onto the back of that scooter.

Reading

Pack an e-reader for your travels filled with your favourite books and those new ones you’ve been meaning to read forever. Unfortunately, packing actual books, while more satisfying, will weigh down your luggage.

Shopping

Exploring the markets and those tiny stores down alleys are one of the best parts about traveling. It is a chance to interact with the locals as they ply their trade. You’ll also be able to pick up some souvenirs and gifts for loved ones at home. If you can’t fit shopping into your itinerary between the beach and museums, make sure to pick up some goodies in the duty free shop at the airport on the way home. You can’t go home empty-handed, after all.

Movies

Watching movies on the airplane is the best way to pass the time. You’ll often be able to see all of those movies you’ve been meaning to catch for months. You’ll also have an opportunity to dig deep into their archives and watch some great classics. Now if only they served popcorn instead of peanuts.

Blogging

If you’re on an extended trip, you may want to consider blogging about your adventures to keep your friends and family updates. Those long stretches of waiting around can be spent writing blog posts, editing photos and updating social media. Provided you’re lucky enough to find a reliable internet connection, of course.

Podcasts

Podcasts are our favourite new way to pass the time. It was Serial which got us addicted. But since then we have loved listening to all sorts of different shows. They entertain and inform in a myriad of ways. The best part is you can download them when you have an internet connection and then listen anywhere. No connection required, making them perfect for travelling.
